Just off the coast of Lombok, the Gili Islands offer some of the most beautiful beaches in Indonesia. Think powdery white sand, swaying palm trees, and crystal-clear turquoise waters.
The three main islands - Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air - each have their own unique charm.
There are few places on Earth that can rival the paradise of the Gili Islands
Located just off the coast of Lombok, these small islands feel like something out of a postcard. Powdery white sand crunches beneath your feet, palm trees sway gently in the breeze, and soft waves lap quietly along the shore. If it weren’t for a touch of authentic Indonesian charm, you might think you had arrived in the Maldives.
The three most famous islands - Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air - lie off Lombok’s northwest coast, each shimmering beautifully in the surrounding turquoise waters. While they share similarities, each island has its own distinct character.
Gili Trawangan, the largest and liveliest of the three, offers a vibrant mix of beach life, restaurants, and nightlife.
Gili Meno, on the other hand, is known as the ultimate honeymoon escape - peaceful, romantic, and secluded.
Gili Air strikes a perfect balance between the two, offering a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere.
Gili Trawangan is also one of the most affordable places in the world to get a diving certification, but you don’t have to dive to experience the magic. Just a short swim from the shore - on all three islands - reveals a vibrant underwater world filled with clownfish, sea turtles, and colorful coral reefs. Gili Meno, in particular, is known for its healthy population of turtles, often spotted just meters from the beach.
While most travelers are familiar with the three main Gili Islands, the archipelago around Lombok hides several lesser-known gems, including Gili Gede and Gili Asahan, located off the southwest coast.
In fact, there are a total of 26 Gili Islands, most of which remain uninhabited
The southern Gili Islands are far less visited than their famous counterparts, yet the island charm is just as captivating. Here, nature takes center stage, local life feels more present, and you can enjoy everything you dream of pristine beaches, crystal clear waters, and unforgettable snorkeling experiences.

When to Visit the Gili Islands
The best time to visit the Gili Islands is during the European summer months, when rainfall is minimal and the sun shines from clear blue skies.

The most common way to reach the Gili Islands is by fast boat from Bali, with departures from Sanur or Padang Bai. The journey typically takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the route and sea conditions.
Snorkelling around the Gili Islands is exceptionally easy and rewarding, with several well-known spots just off the coast of each island.
On Gili Meno, you will find some of the best turtle points, especially along the east coast, where green sea turtles are often seen resting on the seabed or slowly swimming past in shallow water. The famous underwater statues (the “Nest”) are also located here and are a popular snorkeling highlight.
Around Gili Air, the reefs are close to shore and ideal for relaxed snorkeling, with calm conditions, colorful coral gardens, and a wide variety of tropical fish. This makes it a great choice for beginners or families.
Gili Trawangan offers a mix of reef and drift snorkeling, particularly on the north and east sides of the island, where you can encounter turtles, reef sharks, and larger schools of fish.
Most snorkeling tours between the islands include 2–3 stops, typically covering turtle areas, coral reefs, and the underwater statues - giving you a varied and immersive experience in a short time.
Traffic on the Gili Islands is refreshingly simple - because there are no cars or motorbikes on the islands.
Instead, you get around by bicycle, on foot, or by traditional horse-drawn carts (called cidomo). This creates a calm, laid-back atmosphere where the only “traffic” you’ll encounter is the sound of waves and the occasional bike bell.
It’s all part of the charm - and one of the reasons why the Gili Islands feel like a true escape from everyday life.
Gili Air is generally the best choice for families. The island offers a relaxed and safe atmosphere, calm beaches, and easy access to snorkeling directly from the shore. There is a good selection of family-friendly hotels, restaurants, and activities - without the busy nightlife found elsewhere.
Gili Meno is also a great option for families seeking peace and quiet, with very little traffic and a slower pace.
Gili Trawangan can work for families too, especially in quieter areas, but it is generally more lively and better suited for couples or groups of friends.
Yes, we highly recommend booking your hotel in advance - especially during peak seasons and holidays, when the most popular places on the Gili Islands tend to fill up quickly.
The Gili Islands offer a wide range of accommodation, from charming beachfront bungalows to boutique resorts and family-friendly stays. Availability can vary significantly between the islands, and the best locations are often booked early.
