Flores, an island around 2.5 times larger than Bali, is a world of its own -serving as the gateway to Komodo National Park.
Although located not far from Bali, Flores offers a completely different experience in both nature and culture. Tourism is still limited, the infrastructure is winding and undeveloped, and the population is a fascinating mix of ancient tribal communities and Catholic traditions. Uniquely, the island was once home to the prehistoric “hobbits” – Homo floresiensis – who lived here between approximately 38,000 and 13,000 BC.
Flores unfolds in dramatic landscapes of towering volcanoes, lush green mountains, and stunning coastlines. It is the perfect destination for hiking through rice fields and highlands, passing untouched tribal villages and continuing on to the famous “spider web” rice fields, which resemble giant webs when seen from above. Along the way, you will discover waterfalls, turquoise crater lakes, caves, deserted beaches, and vast open spaces.
The unique highlight, Komodo National Park, consists of the islands of Komodo, Rinca, and Padar. The first two are home to the legendary Komodo dragons, found nowhere else on Earth.
The Komodo dragon can grow over 3 meters long and weigh up to 165 kilograms, making it the largest living lizard in the world - and a formidable predator.
Rather than acting out of desperation, the Komodo dragon is a patient and strategic hunter. It quietly approaches its prey, delivers a bite, and then tracks the animal for days until it succumbs to bacteria introduced through the dragon’s saliva.
Interestingly, the dragon often prefers scavenging over fresh kills, and may leave its prey for days or even weeks before feeding.
Visitors can join a “dragon safari” accompanied by an experienced and knowledgeable ranger, who understands the behavior of these fascinating creatures and ensures a safe and insightful experience.
Take a step into untouched Indonesia by visiting Flores as an extension of your Bali holiday - and remember to pack both your hiking shoes and swimwear.
While the Komodo dragons are the main attraction, there is much more to explore in the park. Hike on Padar Island and enjoy breathtaking views of a landscape that feels almost prehistoric.
Or bring your snorkel gear to Pink Beach, where the sand is tinted by microscopic red coral fragments. Beneath the surface, marine life is nothing short of extraordinary, and sightings of manta rays and dolphins are not uncommon, alongside vibrant coral reefs and colorful tropical fish.
Untouched Nature, Rare Wildlife & Authentic Island Life
Flores and Komodo Island offer a travel experience that feels raw, exclusive, and deeply connected to nature. Unlike more commercial destinations, this region remains largely untouched, allowing visitors to experience dramatic landscapes, quiet islands, and pristine seas without mass tourism.
One of the region’s greatest attractions is its diversity. In a single journey, travelers can explore volcanic mountains, savannah hills, pink sand beaches, coral reefs, and traditional villages. This contrast between land and sea creates an ever-changing and visually stunning experience.
Cultural authenticity is another defining element. Flores is home to communities that still preserve ancient traditions, local architecture, and strong spiritual values. Encounters with local people add depth and meaning to the journey, making it more than just a sightseeing trip.
Together, Flores and Komodo Island create a destination that feels adventurous yet timeless - ideal for travelers seeking meaningful, immersive, and unforgettable journeys.
The Only Natural Habitat of Komodo Dragons
Komodo National Park is globally renowned as the only place on Earth where Komodo dragons live in the wild. These prehistoric reptiles roam freely on islands such as Komodo and Rinca, offering visitors a rare and powerful wildlife encounter unlike anywhere else.
Beyond the dragons, the park protects an extraordinary marine ecosystem. The surrounding waters are part of the Coral Triangle, home to vibrant coral reefs, manta rays, sea turtles, and countless tropical fish species. This makes the park equally famous among divers and snorkelers.
The landscapes within the park are equally striking. Rolling hills, savannah terrain, and panoramic viewpoints -especially on Padar Island- create iconic scenery often featured in global travel media.
As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Komodo National Park is carefully managed to balance conservation and tourism, ensuring a sustainable experience for both visitors and wildlife.
Dry Season for the Best Overall Experience
The ideal time to visit Flores and Komodo Island is during the dry season from April to November. During these months, the weather is generally sunny, seas are calmer, and conditions are perfect for sailing, snorkeling, and trekking.
Underwater visibility is at its best during the dry season, making it an excellent time for diving and snorkeling in the Flores Sea. Wildlife sightings, including manta rays, are also more consistent during this period.
The wet season from December to March offers greener landscapes and fewer tourists, but sea conditions can be rougher, and some boat trips may be limited. However, this season can appeal to travelers seeking solitude and dramatic scenery.
Overall, the dry season provides the most reliable and comfortable conditions for experiencing the full beauty of Flores & Komodo Island.
Adventure on Land and Sea
Flores and Komodo Island offer a wide range of activities that appeal to both adventure seekers and relaxed travelers. Popular experiences include island hopping, snorkeling, diving, sailing, hiking, and wildlife encounters.
On Komodo Island and Rinca Island, visitors can trek with park rangers to observe Komodo dragons safely in their natural habitat. Meanwhile, iconic viewpoints such as Padar Island provide unforgettable panoramic landscapes.
In Flores, inland exploration reveals traditional villages, rice terraces, waterfalls, and the famous Kelimutu tri-colored crater lakes. Cultural visits offer insight into local customs, weaving traditions, and daily island life.
This combination of marine adventures and cultural discovery makes Flores & Komodo Island a complete and deeply rewarding destination.
