Bali beach facts

  • Bali’s beaches are diverse—some have volcanic black sand due to the island’s volcanic activity.

  • The island has some of the world’s most spectacular bioluminescent plankton, which can glow at night.

  • Several beaches in Bali serve as nesting sites for sea turtles during the hatching season from April to October.

  • Kuta Beach was one of Bali’s first tourism hotspots and helped put the island on the map in the 1970s.

  • Some beaches disappear and reappear with the tides—like Tegal Wangi Beach’s hidden caves that are only accessible at low tide.

  • Walk on "singing sand" on some remote beaches due to its fine quartz composition.

  • Swim in a Natural "Jacuzzi" at Tegal Wangi Beach near Jimbaran during low tide at sunset while watching the waves crash around you!

Beach Etiquette in Bali

What you need to know:

Respect Local Customs – Balinese culture is deeply spiritual, and certain beaches have religious significance. If you see an offering (canang sari), do not disturb it.

Keep It Clean
– Many locals and expats work hard to keep Bali’s beaches plastic-free. Use designated bins or take your trash with you.

Dress Modestly Near Villages – While bikinis are fine at the beach, covering up when walking through nearby villages is respectful.

Watch for Flags – Some beaches have strong currents. Red flags mean no swimming!

Support Local Businesses – Buy from local vendors and warungs to support the community rather than big chains.
